Recycle A Good Draw? by Rick Lomore

While most of us can remember an exceptional shot we made in the past and would like to be able to repeat it on demand, we (often) can’t. What we can do now at the Club is recycle most of the material we have been throwing out. That’s right- we are starting a complete recycling program after discussion with, and lots of help from, the City of Pembroke and representatives from the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre. Look for a display at registration this Thursday and Friday as well as signage, which will be posted around the Club.

In other curling news, here are some tidbits gleaned from cyberspace.

Moncton NB has been awarded the 2009 Ford world men’s curling championship, its 50th anniversary, to be held at the 7000 seat Moncton Coliseum April 4th to 12th. Tickets should go on sale in February of 2008. This will be the second time Moncton has hosted a world championship, the first being the 1980 Air Canada Silver Broom, won by Rick Folk.

The University of Waterloo has been picked to host the first ever CCA/CIS University Curling Championship at the Guelph and Elora Curling clubs from March 12 – 16, 2008. The winner will represent Canada at the 2009 FISU 24th Winter Universiad in Harbin China.

Turning from the future to recent events, the first major win of the new season was chalked up by the new (and improved?)  Brad Gushue team (Mark Nichols, Chris Schille and Dave Nottal) at the Baden Masters in Switzerland with a 5 – 4 count over Germany’s Andy Kapp.

If you have time this coming weekend, slide on down to Brockville’s Country Club to see some fabulous curling in the Shorty Jenkins Cashspiel. Some big time curlers you will see there include Kevin Martin, Glenn Howard, Guy Hemmings, Wayne Middaugh, Brad Gushue.

Finally on a note for the rest of us, don’t forget to think about getting your mind and body ready for the new season that will be upon us soon. We need to stretch the muscles that haven’t been used for 6 months. Calf, thigh, groin and back will be aching after the first game unless we start to get stretched now as well as just before game time. A good site to review curling exercises is at www.ovphysio.com . Look for the link to Exercise and Stretching programs. New curlers and those looking to remind themselves of curling skills might also look at www.curlingschool.com .
