Top Teams Earn Curling Titles by Peter Copis
Winners galore at the Pembroke Curling Club! The first draw has ended in a number of leagues so we will start with the Monday night competitive league results.
Teams skipped by Jeff Faught and Peter Copis tied for top spot in the ‘A’ division with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses each but the honours went to Copis and his team of Pat Mulvihill (vice), Ken Ahronson (second) and Mel Ready (lead) by virtue of having defeated Faught during round robin play.
The ‘B’ division was won by Tony Martin and his team of Dennis Gauthier (vice), Rod White (second) and Chris Steers (lead). This team went undefeated with seven wins and earned a spot in the ‘A’ division for the second draw.
The ‘C’ division ended in a three way tie that needed a shoot out to figure out who actually won the draw and which one would advance to the ‘B’ division. The tied teams were skipped by Mike Thompson, Bob Johnston and Lois Copis. All had a record of 4 wins against 3 losses but since Copis defeated Thompson and Johnston’s team is heading south in the new year, Lois and her team of Marg Smith (at vice but throwing skip rocks), Laurie Fraser (second) and Heidi Martin (lead) are moving on up.
The first draw of the Wednesday night individual entry mixed league was won by the team of Bob Gauthier (skip), June Lindeman (vice), Harley McDowell (second) and Barb McDowell (lead). The fixed team side of the league will play one continuous draw for position at the end of the season and the league champion will then be determined with a playoff format.
The first draw of the Thursday open league was won by Emile Robert and his team of Sherri Gauthier (vice), Rick Duncan (second) and Kareena Butler (lead). They finished with a perfect 6 and 0 record for the honours.
The second draw for the Thursday night open league is undergoing serious renovations and able bodies are needed. No particular skill is required but a knowledge of how to be a skip, vice, second or lead is beneficial. Breathing will do. To put it quite bluntly, the league is collapsing and we need curlers. A sign up sheet will be posted in the club and the league will resume play in the new year. Emile Robert is the convener and is considering a few options that will enhance participation. In particular, the Monday night league will no longer play overflow games on Thursday. Also, team entries will be an added option and the format may include skins games or two on two challenges. It is all pretty wide open right now but the Great Graniti wouldn’t lie ....... Thursdays rock!!!!
The sign up sheet has been posted for the Annual In Club Funspiel which is to be held January 11 and 12. It is a great way to find out what bonspiels are all about and a good time is always had by all. Check the board out for details and be sure to sign the sheet.
On a somber note, we report that Vince Heney passed away last week . He was a long time member and past president (1981-82) of the Pembroke Curling Club. I would like to take this opportunity to express sincere condolences to the Anne and her family on behalf of the the club and to say that Vince was one of those people that made our community a nicer, friendlier place.
