The End is Nigh by Rick Lomore
With the end of March fast approaching, most of the Club leagues are nearing final standings to determine who will appear in playoffs and whom they will face. The Sunday morning league has already finished its final draw and the only thing left for those curlers is the Baberspiel, which will take place in April. Players note that this is limited to 32 curlers so make sure you sign up if you haven’t done so already.
The Tuesday night super league has wound up regular play and Carl Zieroth came out on top. The other teams remaining are skipped by Dave Trautrim, Emile Robert and Deep River’s Leo Buckley. Playoffs will have started by the time you read this with pairings being Zieroth Trautrim and Robert Buckley.
In a Friday marquee grudge match, Ed Lindeman’s foursome took on the redoubtable Bill Wilson crew. With a $100.00 side bet on the line (proceeds to go to the brine pump fund), Wilson came out on top and generously kicked in a C-note of his own. In perhaps a fit of temporary insanity, the enigmatic Lindeman offered to shave his head if people would raise $2000 for the pump. There were instantly offers of a whack of money so Ed is now anxiously waiting to see if he must be shorn of his (almost) flowing tresses. There will be posters around the club showing what Ed might look like sans hair. Let’s make him get out his razor.
Speaking of the brine pump, a vital component of our ice plant, expert opinion says that it is limping along but could calve at any time. A fund has been set up to gather enough money to replace it over the summer. Several thousand dollars have already been obtained. See Jerry Sloan or any member of the executive for details or to donate. Look at the club website to see a way to make your donation charitable for taxation purposes.
Finally, the club volunteers are starting the preparations for the Closing bonspiel and banquet. The bonspiel will be April 11-12 and the banquet will be held in conjunction with the curling. Sign up at the club or call Jeff Faught (613-687-6404) or the Club (613-732-4113). Details are posted on the Club web site (http://pembroke.ovca.com).
Have a smooth slide!
