Final Flurry by Rick Lomore
The Stanley Cup playoffs have started, the snow is finally melting and the end of another curling season has come to Pembroke. It ended with a flurry of activity, as the club was the scene of the closing bonspiel and banquet, closely followed by the Sunday league’s finale, the ever-popular Baberspiel.
The overall winner of the club closing was the team skipped by Paul Bourne, ably assisted by Diane Corrin, Ken Brown and Catherine Chisnell. In the second draw, the high three game winner was the team of Pat Lafreniere, Rod White, June Lindemann and Dan Stewart. Both teams won their three games but Bourne and company amassed more points for the win.
A special event during the closing saw Ed Lindemann raise approximately $2000 for the brine pump fund by offering his leonine head of hair for sacrifice at the hands of Pat Lafreniere and Vicky Burnison. Hats off to Ed for this gesture of selflessness. (Actually Ed needs a hat- he’s finding it a little cooler than normal.)
A lot of thanks go out to all the volunteers who stepped into the breach to help organize a very successful closing. Bill Wilson and Pat Snell coordinated efforts, Lois Copis and her team of Pat Snell and hubby; Pat Lafreniere and Vicky Burnison concocted a fine chili with the protein being donated by Lianne and Keith Sell. Judy Pattinson and Marlene Gloster did yeoman work with prizes and decorations, while Peter Copis stepped up to score and do what the women asked him when Bill Wilson had a sudden commitment out of town.
The Baberspiel on Sunday saw a couple of Gauthiers hang on to the Baberspiel crown- seems only fitting. The Team of Bob Gauthier, Jane Loftus, Ron Gauthier (not Rockin’ Ron) and Myles Miller walked away with the win.
In the loose ends department, the Monday night competitive league saw the “A” championship taken by the team of Jeff Faught, Sandra Faught, Scott Smaglinski and Kameron Odorizzi. Earlier, the “B” side was won by Paul Bourne, Ian Husk, Ziggy Geisen and Tony Scott. (Geisen and Scott were sparing for Bourne’s regulars, Dale and Tyler Martin). Lastly the “C” crown was awarded to Randy Ritchie, Larry Freeman, Linda Ritchie and Roma Freeman.
The Wednesday night fixed team league saw a bit of an upset in the playoffs. The overall winner of the round robin portion was Mike McCarter but the playoffs saw the team of Scott Alberts, Penny Neal, Garh Vanni and Tanya Ferrish finish on top after three rounds.
All curlers please note that the club’s A.G.M. is to be held at the club on Wednesday June 4th at 7:00 p.m. If at any time over the past season you had a complaint or suggestion this is the time to make it heard. The club must have its regular members take a greater interest in the running of what is a fairly large enterprise. See you there.
Until next season, have a smooth slide!
